Dental Treatment in Cats

Dental Disease is a common issue in cats, with over 70% of cats over the age suffering with it

Common Dental Issues:

The most common issues we see are:

  • Gingivitis – this is caused by plaque bacteria which colonise the space between the teeth and the gum, causing inflammation. It is generally reversible with treatment
  • Periodontitis – if left untreated, gingivitis can develop into this more serious condition which can cause irreversible damage.
  • Tooth Resorption - a condition where the body starts to break down and absorb the structures of a tooth. This can expose the nerves in the tooth and become very painful. It also increases the risk of teeth fractures.
  • Fractured Teeth - this can be caused by trauma, or secondary to other issues causing tooth weakness.
  • Stomatitis - this is a very painful condition which appears when an extreme inflammatory response to plaque occurs, resulting in very inflamed and sore gums, sometimes extending to the lips and the tongue.
  • Retained Decidious Teeth - this is when the "baby" teeth do not fall out when they should. This can cause issues with adult teeth developing in the wrong position

Left untreated, dental disease can become very painful. Additionally, bacteria from the teeth can end up spreading to other areas in the body, leading to the development of kidney or heart disease.

Dental X-Rays:

Here at Origin Vets, we take dental treatment very seriously. As a Gold Standard Cat Friendly Practice, we have the ability to perform dental x-rays, which are a very important part of planning any dental treatments. Unfortunately, not all veterinary practices have dental x-ray facilities, despite being recommended by all veterinary dental specialists.

Dental x-rays allow us to see what is going on below the gumline - sometimes there can be resporptive lesions, retained roots or other abnormalties which are not visible without them.

Dental Prices:

At Origin Vets Clinic, we aim to have fair and transparent prices.

To do so, we have created treatment bands for dental treatments. All bands include x-rays pre and post dental and  post operative pain relief (up to 7 days) with intravenous fluids also being included for bands 2-4.

Note that If your cat is on the health plan, pre-op bloods are included. If they are not on the plan, pre-op bloods are £80.
